Worried Sick

A few words about these books, Worried Sick? and Worried Sick? The Workbook--and their author Dr. Fredric Neuman.

Dr. Neuman is the Director of the Anxiety and Phobia Center of the White Plains Hospital, the oldest hospital-affiliated clinic of its kind in the country. The clinic has treated thousands of patients suffering from phobias and the other anxiety disorders. In recent years it has developed an innovative program for the treatment of worries that were previously less common, that is, worries about health. Perhaps it is not surprising that concerns about health have worsened in the wake of a seemingly endless succession of reports in the media of terrible and often previously unknown dangers, ranging from anthrax to chronic lyme disease. Many people worry; and some worry terribly. Given any set of symptoms, they imagine they have the worst possible illness, and they are not reassured by repeated visits to doctors. Their over-utilization of medical and diagnostic services is one cause of the precipitous rise in medical costs. Their condition has been previously overlooked because it overlaps with a number of other psychiatric categories, including depression, panic-disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. When it has been recognized, it has been dismissed as unresponsive to treatment.  Nevertheless, the Anxiety and Phobia Center has demonstrated over the last 6 years that most patients can be helped over a relatively short period of time by a cognitive-behavioral psycho-therapy. Unfortunately, very few people, including doctors, know that such an affective treatment program is available. In order to call attention to this problem and to explain its treatment, Dr. Neuman has written Worried Sick? and Worried Sick? The Workbook. The audience for these books should be substantial.
